This year has been the hardest I can remember having, but also the best in a number of ways. I got the inspiration for this blog post from my Spotify end of the year wrap up because music was there through all of the heartache and all of the happiness that was 2020. Although these might not be the songs that I listened to the most this year, they are definitely, in part, why I survived it.
Know Me – The Band Camino
This year, my relationship of three years ended. It’s so easy to point fingers and place blame when a relationship ends, but this song really helped change my perspective for the better. At the end of the day it’s no one’s fault, there is no blame to be placed. I just lost myself in the middle of loving someone else, and I’ve finally found myself again.
“It’s eight fifteen and I don’t know where to start
Can’t you see how unhappy you are
And it seems like you don’t know
You don’t know me
Well I guess it’s really my fault
I did it for myself this time
I guess I started over
Without you in mind
And I guess it’s really over
I’m taking me to places I’ve never been
I’m putting rubber to the asphalt
And I’m never coming home”
A Rock – Hardy
Hardy has become one of my favorite artists this year thanks to Brian and this song may be my favorite. My English loving self can appreciate Hardy’s use of a rock as something that follows us through our entire life. It starts with skipping a rock, then being stuck between a rock and a hard place, buying a rock (an engagement ring) and finally being buried underneath one. To me, this song has such a good message. Life moves fast and sometimes the most important things are the ones that seem insignificant.
“And one day your breath costs life itself
Your book gets hung on Heaven’s shelf
They say a few words like it’s a damn shame
Then they lay you down and they write your name on a rock
Yeah, we’re all just livin’ life on a rock”
A Thousand Bad Times – Post Malone
This year has taught me a lot and one of my biggest lessons is that I can handle anything life throws at me. That’s why I love this song because my man Post Malone is saying the same thing. 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year and if we’ve made it this far, we can do damn near anything.
“I had a thousand bad times
So what’s another time to me?
You try to burn my house down
But what’s another house to me?
‘Cause I can take anything that you give me
It’s gonna take a lot more to kill me
So thank you for the grave
I needed me a place to sleep”
Fly Over States – Jason Aldean
This song has a special place in my heart because I live in a fly over state. Growing up in the midwest, there’s a lot of people that can’t wait for the day that they can get away from their hometown. But this year has made me realize that I would have done myself a huge disservice by moving away from Sioux City. I have met my favorite people, and had some of the coolest experiences in a place that most people can only imagine flying over.
“Take a ride across the badlands
Feel that freedom on your face
Breathe in all that open space
Meet a girl from Amarillo
You’ll understand why God made
Why you’d want to plant your stakes
In those fly over states”
Even if these songs don’t make it to your playlist, I hope they give you some insight into how I survived this year and how you might too. I’ll see ya in the next one. xoxo Shelby
