If you find yourself watching true crime documentaries like it’s a second job, these are perfect for you.
I started listening to podcasts the same year I started my first office job for no reason other than wanting to try something new, and boy am I glad I did. True crime has always been something that fascinated me, even from a young age I can remember watching every CSI show I could find. This genre has really grown in recent years through Netflix Original documentaries on the topic such as Confessions with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes and The Staircase. Let me tell you though, if you don’t have enough time during the day to sit down and watch a two hour documentary – you need this podcasts in your life ASAP.
The first podcast and by far my favorite, comes with a little disclaimer. This true crime comedy podcast is aimed at making the listener laugh in between talking about some pretty terrible things; which for some can be a little off putting. For me, and for a lot of listeners of “My Favorite Murder” – we tend to cope with awkward, scary and just down right awful things with some humor. Which is exactly why I love this podcast so much. Not only are you getting all the facts, but you feel like you’re having a conversation with two of the coolest chicks around.
“My Favorite Murder” was created by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark in 2016 and I have no shame in saying that I have personally listened to all 165 episodes. It’s safe to say that this one is binge worthy.
On the same side of the coin comes another of my favorite podcasts: “Crime Junkie”. “Crime Junkie” stars another two badass women named Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat from my neck of the woods in the Midwest. These two hook you in with their captivating story telling and calming voices.
The reason I give this one a nine out of ten though is the lack of conversation between the two hosts to break up the narrative in a productive way. With that being said, I think this is a must listen for anyone looking for an easy to follow story line, and not to mention the damn good intro song.
The next and final podcast on my list has got to go to “And That’s Why We Drink” with Christine Schiefer and Em Schulz. Are we sensing a pattern here with these girl bosses? Em and Christine take true crime to another level by adding a sprinkle of another topic that most of us true crime fans also dabble in: the supernatural.
Em ropes you in with a supernatural tale ranging anywhere from the Queen Mary to Annabelle and Christine ends the show with a true crime case. This baby gets an 8.5 on the Shelby scale solely for the fact that supernatural stories like this can go from super cool to super hokey really quickly. With over 150 episodes under their belts though, I can tell you that Christine and Em won’t disappoint you with their banter and wine induced discussion of all things macabre.
If you love everything true crime just like I do, these three podcasts are a wonderful way to get your fix without having to plant yourself in front of a television for hours at a time. I also thought posting this one on Friday the 13th seemed more than fitting. Happy listening friends!
